We know that you, as a parent or carer, will want the best possible care suited to the needs of your child while at nursery. Please explore our web site to learn about the service we offer. We hope that it reassures you that your child will be given every opportunity to grow and develop in a secure and friendly environment. Every member of our nursery staff has been fully trained, or is undergoing training, with a qualification in childcare and first aid. Staff are provided with further training opportunities, to develop their skills and keep them up-to-date.

woodworkHow Children Learn

Direct experience, through play, is the most important way of learning for children.

This means they need to use all their senses and all the parts of their bodies in exploring and discovering the world around them for themselves. They are encouraged to absorb and develop what they learn from such experience by talking with other children and adults.

There is always a wide variety of play materials available to cover all aspects of play and development, including pre-reading, writing, maths and science activities as an introduction to Key Stage One of the National Curriculum. Key Stage One is the basis of the Government guidelines used in schools with children aged 5 -7 years.

Care is taken to ensure that children’s personal experiences include participation in the wider world outside the nursery.

Early Learning Goals

Children are encouraged and helped, through a wide range of nursery activities, to develop the skills they will need before entering school. The main areas of development are:

  • Personal skills of self sufficiency and independence, self awareness and self esteem
  • Social skills such as sharing, helping and co-operating, listening, explaining, self control
  • Language and literacy development to: – encourage clear speech, wide vocabulary and an ability to listen –  understand and explain clearly – create the foundations for reading and writing skills
  • Conceptual development of number, size, shape, weight, volume, money, time
  • Physical development and control of large and small muscles such as those used in running, hopping, riding as well as those used in threading, drawing, cutting and sticking
  • Imagination and creativity

  • Curiosity and observation – drawing on and cultivating the child’s natural curiosity in order to develop an understanding of the world around. Provide experiences outside the nursery and involvement with the community in order to develop a knowledge and understanding of everyday life and the wider world outside the nursery. Children are taken on outings and members of the community are invited to visit.

Planning the Activity Programmes

In order to help children progress towards the above learning goals, activity programmes are designed to provide for four separate age ranges within the nursery:

  • 6 months – 15 months
  • 15 months – 24 months
  • 2 years – 3.5 years
  • 3.5 years – rising fives

These are approximate age ranges and staff use their own judgement to decide when to move a child from one learning group to another to accommodate each child’s stage of development.  Activity programmes are planned every week by the team of nursery officers responsible for each age group and are overseen by the Senior Nursery Officer and the Nursery Leader. They take into account the skills to be developed in each child, the type of activity which will encourage these skills, and the resources available within the nursery for this purpose.

computerPreparation For School

From three and a half years, children are taught for part of the time in small groups where they can concentrate and focus on developing reading, writing, maths and science skills. Specialised equipment and resources are provided for these sessions which link with the activities and learning outcomes of the National Curriculum.

Keyworker Approach

Squirrals 013Each child is welcomed every day by one particular member of staff who takes a special interest in them. This member of our team makes a special bond with your child, getting to know their particular needs and preferences and looking after them at certain times of day, such as on arrival, on leaving and during meal times and breaks. This helps your child to feel relaxed with someone they know. The key carer observes progress and keeps the child’s development records.
